We realize that in North America, we have become quite spoiled with our free wi-fi hotspots in Starbucks. Despite India having its own version of Silicon Valley, it’s not immediately evident to a tourist how to access the internet, nevermind WiFi.
In the Delhi airport, free wi-fi is available for 20 minutes or so, but you need a functional India-based cellphone to sign in and use it. Cellphones are like a form of official identification here (to be explained more in a future post). In our haste to catch our plane and to touch base with Annie, we noticed a gentleman behind us - and I truly mean a gentleman – who looked like he might be able to answer a few questions about India’s technology maze.
Ajay helped us to reach Annie by letting us use his phone to call or text her. But it didn’t stop there; he took us under his wing as we were on our way to Rajkot, via a flight to Amedebad then another 3.5 hours of ground transportation. While in Delhi, we were still undecided and uncertain about the best way to get from Amedebad to Rajkot. Ajay, a crisis management engineer with a gas and petrol company in India, had a driver booked to pick him up at the airport and arranged for the driver to take us on to Rajkot after dropping him off at his beautiful home. There we met his wife, two children, and mother as they shared tea with us before the next leg of our journey.
