Today’s Intercultural Communication

English accents in India vary a lot from place to place. Also tolerance for noise and distraction is much higher than for us westerners; this kind of skill is quite impressive.

For example, in a room of the size of an average powder room, you can find 3 or 4 Indians conversing on the phone at the same time without any problems. In North America, this kind of distraction would drive us up the walls.

SMS or texting is often our tool of choice to contact for services and information. Here is an excerpt of a communication chain we got today. I’ll let you figure out what happened here…

Kirsten-David: Interested in tour of Palamau park on dec 25 for two days. Do you have any availability?

Agent: YAS PASABUL IN YOUR TOUR IN 25 TH

Kirsten-David: English please. We are not from India. Thank you.

(LOL, still waiting for a response from Agent)
